Firefighters were working to extinguish a large fire that started Wednesday night and was still smoldering Thursday morning at a Fort Worth scrap yard.

Firefighters were called about 6:30 p.m. to American Shredder at Northeast 38th and North Main streets, near Fort Worth Meacham International Airport. They found a large pile of recyclable material burning, spokesman Michael Drivdahl said.

Crews contained the fire to the pile by 9 p.m. but expected to remain at the scene for several hours to extinguish the blaze, he said.

As crews worked, the wind shifted directions forcing them to change tactics, Drivdahl said.

Firefighters were monitoring the air quality in the area and did not think there were risks to life or health, Drivdahl said.

An order for residents in the area to shelter in place was lifted by 7 a.m., but residents and others were still encouraged to avoid the area.

The shelter advisory issued by the fire department and Fort Worth Office of Emergency Management extended from North Main Street to Beach Street and Northeast 38th Street to Northeast 28th Street. Residents were urged to stay inside with doors and windows shut.

No injuries have been reported.
